It’s already mid-December and for many small business owners, these last few weeks of the year often end up being a last minute scramble to find lost receipts, track and make any year-end contributions, and tally up business expenses — among many other things.
Getting organized in your home or office is all about developing good habits and systems. So if you’re looking for some awesome daily practices that will help you start the new year afresh, here are some great ones that you can start implementing today.
DEVELOP A ROUTINE. Write down your weekly schedule, block in times for activities that occur regularly and matter the most, and set up the framework to keep focused and on track.
USE A SCHEDULER / PLANNER. Go old-school with a printed daily/monthly planner and sticky notes that you review at the start of each day, or choose a digital scheduler like Google Calendar that syncs all meetings and appointments to your phone and computer automatically. Or get the best of both worlds and integrate both! Choose your planner wisely, USE it regularly, and keep it handy for quick notes and easy reference.
DELEGATE. Review your to-do list and find any tasks that you find difficult to do yourself, or that could be better sourced to a teammate or colleague. (Do what you love, love what you do, right?) Feel that stress melt away.
DECLUTTER. You’re more likely to stay organized and focused if your working space (or home, purse, work bag) is clear of clutter. Simply pick a day and time each week (like a Thursday or Friday afternoon) to sort through all the notes, documents and other things you’ve accumulated. Be sure to recycle, shred or toss anything you don’t need, and file away any items to keep.
PRO TIP: Declutter your desk at the end of each day so it doesn’t build up!
GIVE EVERYTHING A HOME. The first step to getting organized is ensuring that everything has its own place in your home or office. Create easy-to-access storage areas for things you use all the time, and then label and store away anything not needed as often. Group like items together.
KEEP ONLY WHAT YOU REALLY NEED. Ditch anything unnecessary. Less stuff = less clutter. Donate, sell or recycle anything taking up space to make room for the things that are most important to your business and daily flow.
